Chapter Leaders

Our Music Director, Jordan Johnson, first sang barbershop in high school, performing with the Conejo Valley chapter. Originally an instrumentalist, he has studied clarinet, saxophone, guitar, and piano. He attended Indiana University, studying jazz and classical music, and later, computer science and Spanish. He now teaches at the Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory School.

After years away from barbershop, he joined the Gold Standard Chorus in 2007 while a grad student at UC Santa Cruz, and since then has performed with many a cappella groups. He became the director of the chorus in August 2008, and now strives to turn his musical knowledge into fun, educational, and inspiring chorus rehearsals — and above all, to share the joy of a capella harmony.

Our Associate Music Director, Dale Summer, has been around barbershop music since the day she was a born. Her father, two uncles and grandfather sang quartet harmonies at family gatherings and holidays while she was growing up. Her love of singing and dancing found her in a variety of musical groups and musical theatre for many years. She graduated from the Music Department at Cabrillo College with an A.A., and received her B.A. in Music/Voice from UCSC, and obtained her Orf Schulwerk certificate from Mills College. She is retired from teaching general music and recorder in the Scotts Valley Unified and Mountain school districts.

Thrilled to hear of a mixed barbershop chorus in Santa Cruz, she joined GSC in 2009, becoming an assistant director, and then Associate Director in 2013. She shares directing duties with Jordan and brings fun, laughter and learning to the Wednesday night rehearsals.

In addition, Dale also sings with the Mission Valley Chapter of the Sweet Adelines in Los Gatos.
