Think Barbershop -- Think Young!
The most recent new members of the Gold Standard
Barbershop Chorus are all students at Cabrillo College.
Jerry Orloff, membership VP of the chorus,
welcomed 2008's newest members with Barbershop Harmony Society folders.
All three became interested in four-part harmony when quartets from the
chorus sang at their high schools.
(l to r:) David Finau graduated from San Lorenzo
Valley HS where, as a senior, he played Sir Harry in ONCE UPON A
MATTRESS. Dale Absher and Brandon Eddy are graduates of
Harbor High, where Brandon, as a senior, played the title role in BYE
BYE BIRDIE.

Kellen Joins Gold Standard Chorus
"I didn't ask you your age. What's all the fuss? All I want
to do is sing."
We don't know exactly what seven-year-old
Kellen was thinking when he asked the chorus leadership if he
might join, but we do know that the chorus members, and particularly
Kellen's mother, Brenda, of the tenor section, all gave new
bass Kellen an enthusiastic welcome. (l to r:) Jerry Orloff,
Membership V-P; Jim Davis, Director; Dan Jett, President;
Pat Lanphier, Immediate Past President.
The Gold Standard Barbershop Chorus does not actively recruit
elementary-school-age youngsters. However, when youngsters, parents and
chorus all agree that it's beneficial to all, there is no age barrier.
Kellen joins four high school students already on the roster as members
of both the chorus and the international Barbershop Harmony Society
(BHS).
The Gold Standard Chorus has been singing in Santa Cruz since
1989. This is the first time that anyone under high school age has
joined. There have been youngsters, some as young as six, who have
sung with other chapters of BHS.
If you would like to sing barbershop or visit the chorus, please
call Jerry Orloff at (831) 688 0909. |

Jerry Orloff -- Man of Note
Extraordinary
Jerry Orloff is the international
Barbershop Harmony Society's most outstanding "Man Of Note". At the
House of Delegates Meeting of the Far Western District in Reno March 16,
2007, Charlie Davenport, BHS Director of Membership, presented
Jerry with his Man of Note pin number #180. That's more new members
than any other single member of the Society has ever sponsored! One
wonders how many other new members were brought in by the 180 that Jerry
sponsored. (Note: Over the past 42 years, Jerry has given
credit to other Society members that totaled 26 "Man Of Note" awards
who helped Jerry promote various other membership programs, such as
"Share The Wealth" programs, "Auditions For Admissions" (A.F.A.),
"OPERATION HAROLD HILL", "OPERATION HAIRCUT!", and recently, "100%
CLUB".)
If you would like to sing barbershop, call Jerry at
(831) 688 0909. Who
knows, you may be #181

Valengrams 2007 a Very Rewarding
Experience for Quartets
Linda Hopper (center), the "Spur Gal" of the
Silver Spur Restaurant, was surprised on Valentine's Day by a quartet,
Vocal Gentry, from the Gold Standard Chorus that sang to her and
several customers of the restaurant.
The quartet -- (l to r:) Pat
Lanphier, bass; Gina Jett, tenor; Tim Donnelly, lead;
and Duane King, baritone -- enjoyed singing all day long as four
quartets from the chorus stopped at schools, businesses and restaurants
to deliver their annual Valengrams. (Pat was subbing as bass for Dan
Jett, who couldn't get off of work, but took his lunch hour to sing
with his quartet.)
If you would like to sing
with the chorus, call Jerry Orloff at (831) 688 0909.

Monte Vista Christian School
MV4, a quartet from
Monte Vista Christian
School, competed in Reno on March 18, with high school barbershop
singers from California, Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
To prepare, the quartet sang for the Gold Standard
Chorus during a regular Wednesday night rehearsal at Pasatiempo Inn.
MVCS took fourth place in the high school level quartet
contest put on by the Far Western District of the Barbershop Harmony
Society in Sparks, Nev.
Their prize was a check for $200 for use by their
school's music department. The greater prize was a marvelous
introduction to the world of barbershop, and possibly the first steps in
a lifelong hobby. |
